Neurotransmitter and Neuromodulator Analysis Using Capillary Electrophoresis With Laser -Induced Fluorescence Detection

A variety of results on these neurotransmitters/neuromodulators have been elucidated using CE-LIF methods. Experimental results of the D-Asp study are consistent with the hypothesis that D-Asp is involved in cell to cell communication in Aplysia californica. In addition, D-Glu is found in the sensory neurons of the sensorimotor synapse and induces a larger cellular response on the motor neurons than L-Asp. A method for single cell analysis of D-amino acid containing peptides in Aplysia abdominal neurons has been developed and the D-form dominates in one diastereomer pair. Lastly, in preliminary studies, the release of L-Glu versus acetylcholine from specific regions of the brain of freely moving rats appears dependent on stimulation parameters, causing differential regulation of the circadian systems.
