The incorporation of place-based contextual engineering into water system design

This research follows an Engineering Consultants practice of Contextual Engineering in a project to address water access in the Bodaway Gap Chapter of the Navajo Nation. This research project was motivated by the unique place-based context of the Bodaway Gap Chapter and how the Engineering Consultants perception of that context impacted project management and design decisions. Data collected through autoethnographic notes were analyzed with thematic analysis. Thematic analysis revealed three themes on the impact the context of the Bodaway Gap Chapter had on the project. The discussion explores how the themes of the Engineering Consultants practice were relevant in project management decisions and delivery of final conceptual design. This research concluded that the Engineering Consultants needed to have a thorough understanding of the Bodaway Gap Chapter to break through initial distrust of the project team to progress on the project.
