Force and moment analysis of a passive morphing wing under unsteady motion
Abstract
dc:descriptionAn experimental setup is designed to provide unsteady linear and rotational motion to a wing and measure aerodynamic loading. A passive morphing wing configuration is studied in the current work with a bi-stable trailing edge that can snap through instabilities to two different configurations. This passive morphing is capable of toggling to different configurations based on the perceived pressure field. A load cell is used to measure forces and moments on the wing. The objectives of the overall study are: (i) To develop and characterize an experimental setup for future unsteady aerodynamics studies. (ii) To determine the aerodynamic loading experienced by the wing and capture the dynamic loading experienced during the snap-through process. (iii) To understand the performance of the morphing under varied conditions to enable improved iterations of the wing. The current study will focus on results from load cell measurements for both static and passively morphing airfoils.
