Abstract
dc:description1. We examined immunohistochemically fifty-four placentas at various gestational ages. We studied the reaction of the trophoblast and Hofbauer cells to nineteen antigens. 2. Comparative study between the three trimester of gestation is reported for the first time. 3. The study for the antigens CALLA, Macrophages-Dako, K-67, Leu-M5, IL-2R, T4, Leu-3a+3b and S-100 in placenta is also reported for the first time. 4. The syncytiotrophoblast showed positive staining for Cytokeratin at all of the three trimester of pregnancy, for EMA only in the third trimester and for a1-AcT and a1-AT in the first trimester. It was consistently unreactive with any of the other antigens employed in the present study. 5. Positive reaction of the cytotrophoblast was demonstrated for Cytokeratin, CALLA, a1-AcT and a1-AT. There was practically no reaction to the other antigens. 6. We believe the presence of EMA in the trophoblast in the last trimester is probably associated with the maturation or differentiation of trophoblast during the pregnancy.lt is also possible the presence of CALLA in the trophoblast to be associated with the primary development of hemopoietic cells in yolk sac. We believe this aspect needs further study. 7. The different reaction of the syncytiotrophoblast and cytotrophoblast of different trimester can help to determine the gestational age of the curettage. 8. The Hofbauer cells were positive for Macrophages-Dako, a1-AcT, a1-AΤ, Vimentin, CALLA, T4, Leu3a+3b in all three trimester. Leu-M5 positivity was only found in the first trimester in contrast to HLA-DR positivity found in the second and third trimester. 9. The positive reaction of Hofbauer cells for the above antigens combined with the negative reaction for Pan-T, Pan-B, IL-2R, S-100 and T-6 and the studies by other researchers favors the monocytic origin of these cells. It has been proposed that the Hofbauer cells are not fully differentiated macrophages, since they do not appear to contain LZ. In contrast, we believe that the presence of LZ is also associated with the phase of the cell cycle and the phagocytic function. 10. The number of mitoses in the trophoblastic cells was larger than in the stromal cells in the first trimester. Mitotic figures in trophoblastic cells are also present in the third trimester although fewer. This finding in connection to the presence of ΕΜA in the trophoblast confirms the view that the trophoblast matures in the progress of pregnancy. Mitoses of the Hofbauer cells are present in the three trimester of pregnancy and this finding favors the hypothesis that the Hofbauer cells are a replicating population.
