Abstract
dc:descriptionThe development of blood pumps for use in heart surgery has to fulfill different demands. On the one hand there is technical performance, on the other hand there is low rate of complications. The technical performance can be tested without difficulty by in-vitro tests. Estimation of mean complications like hemolysis and coagulation for futher/future use in-vivo are more difficult. Especially the comparability of indices of hemolysis from different kind of pumps and of different working groups is problematic. So far it is not possible to separate hemolysis caused by pumps from hemolysis caused by erythrocyte fragility. This is the reason for using a standard blood pump additional while testing new pumps and compare with each other. But this enables only a relativly assessment. The assignment of this thesis is to assess the hemoresistometer concerning an absolute judgement of hemolysis and try to calibrate the mechanical fragility of erythrocytes. The size of hemolysis caused by the hemoresistometer is examined under influence of different test conditions like temperatur of stored blood, duration of blood storage and device temperatur. The results show that isolation of erythrocyte fragility from total hemolysis and calibration of erythrocyte fragility was not possible so far. But the results as well show that the hemoresistometer is able to replace a standard blood pump as a reference while testing new pumps. Lower costs and less complexity of using the hemoresistometer are further advantages as well. Finally approaches are explained for more elaborated determination of hemolysis in view of further development of the hemoresistometer.
