Assessment of Myocardial Fibrosis using Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Extracellular Volume Mapping in Cancer Patients Treated with Anthracycline-based Chemotherapy Compared with Untreated Cancer Patients and Cancer-free Peers
Abstract
dc:description.abstractIn this thesis, we will evaluate the effect of anthracycline chemotherapy on measures of myocardial injury and fibrosis using quantitative cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging techniques. Anthracycline-based chemotherapy regimens are often an essential component of curative cancer treatments, but are associated with myocardial injury, heart failure, and cardiovascular events. Elevated native T1 and extracellular volume (ECV) assessments indicative of myocardial fibrosis or injury have been observed in adult cancer survivors treated with anthracyclines. It remains undetermined, however, whether these measures are related to the cancer or the treatment for cancer.
