dc:descriptionDuring the last decade various soybean genetic linkage maps have been developed based not only on morphological and biochemical traits but also on molecular traits such as RFLP, RAPD, AFLP, and SSR data. None of these, however, has been associated with specific chromosomes of soybean. Therefore, this study was conducted with the objective of integrating all available classical genetic i.e. pathological, morphological, and biochemical and molecular (RFLP, RAPD, AFLP, SSR) linkage maps to specific chromosomes in an effort to develop a universal soybean map. The overall goal of this aspect of the study is to assign the 20 soybean molecular linkage groups to each of the 20 soybean chromosomes (2n = 41). In this study four out of the 20 soybean chromosomes have been associated to molecular linkage groups (MLG). Molecular linkage groups N, Al, F, and D2 were associated with soybean chromosomes 3, 5, 13, and 17, respectively. A universal soybean genetic map is extremely useful for establishing the genetic position of economic traits for improving soybean yields, for use in plant variety protection, for detection of quantitative trait loci (QTLs), and for map-based cloning of economically important genes.
