MoMA in France: The Construction of an *American Cultural Identity

Drawing on my archival research at MoMA, the Archives of American Art, and the National Archives I analyze the three major historical surveys of American art sent abroad by MoMA during the fifties: 12 Modern American Painters and Sculptors (1953); 50 Ans d'art aux etats-unis (1955); and The New American Painting (1958--59). Together they define a key phase for the history of the International Program, spanning its tentative beginnings through to the breakthrough for American art in Europe. Using these exhibitions as case studies my project tracks the dialogue between the above institutions, their respective motives, and the ramifications of this association for the emerging American cultural image in Europe.
