Diffusion and Magnetization Transfer Studies of Neural Tissue

Our experiments showed that diffusion and magnetization transfer do not offer a unique window to neural function, as had been suggested by some reports in the literature. Rather, our studies taken together with the literature suggest that both these phenomena affect the standard hemodynamics-dependent functional MRI signal. The work presented here therefore helps to understand previously reported observations about diffusion and magnetization transfer. En route to testing the possibility of using diffusion imaging to image neural function, a new apparent diffusion tensor (ADT) imaging pulse sequence was developed and tested, and better insight into the measurement of the ADT was reached using both experiments and simulations.
