In conclusion, studies described in this thesis provide evidence that relaxin, estrogen and progesterone contribute to the increase in the cervical cell content during the second half of pregnancy by promoting proliferation and inhibiting apoptosis of cervical cells. The extent to which relaxin affects these cellular processes is greatest during late pregnancy.
