Metabolic Control Analysis of Carbon Pathways
Abstract
dc:descriptionIn a complex metabolic system, collective behaviors can emerge which are not obvious consequences of the individual components, because each of the components interacts with others in unpredictable ways. In the particular case of carbon metabolism, the emergent condition of this complex interaction will be the regulation of the carbon flux through the system. The formal model presented in this dissertation incorporates complex kinetic equations and applies the theory of metabolic control analysis (MCA) to the system at steady state. The model allows to simulate not only the not fluxes of carbon through UDP-glucose during cellular growth but also calculates the control and elasticity coefficients of the variables embedded in the metabolic web under study. The practical application of this model consists in its ability to identify enzymes with a higher regulatory capacity and, consequently, it can be used as a tool to facilitate the manipulation of carbon acquisition and allocation In plants using molecular approaches.
