These studies demonstrate that ERK activity in the auditory forebrain reflects information about the familiarity and significance of a specific birdsong stimulus. Moreover, ERK activation appears to be necessary, but perhaps not sufficient, for triggering of an IEG response to song presentation. Thus ERK has a central role in connecting behavioral and perceptual experience to genomic mechanisms of learning and memory.
