Clinical Practice Guidelines as a Management Tool for Antibiotic Resistance in Streptococcus Pneumoniae

The analysis of the Streptococcus pneumoniae susceptibility patterns revealed that the resistance rates were not significantly different among the facilities, and were within the range of rates seen throughout the United States. The analysis of the clinical practice guidelines revealed that physicians do not use guidelines that they believe will not benefit their patients. This hampers the use of clinical practice guidelines for antibiotic resistance problems because many physicians do not accept that antibiotic resistance is a major problem; therefore, guidelines to address this problem would not be beneficial to their patients. The use of continuous quality improvement as an alternative to address the problem of antibiotic resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae is discussed.
