In the Vanguard: The Colombian Novel Between the Wars

"The common perception is that Colombia lacked a ""true"" avant-garde and its novel was inconsequential in an overall consideration of Latin American vanguard literature. Taking exception to this view, this study focuses on Colombian novelists who have contributed not only to the development of the modern Colombian novel but also to the formation of the avant-garde. Chapter One defines and discusses the avant-garde in general and introduces the Colombian avant-garde within a broad historical and ideological context. The succeeding chapters analyze the works of representative writers who revolutionized Colombian literature, violating accepted social values and traditional literary constructs. Chapter Two discusses Eduardo Zalamea Borda's novel 4 anos a bordo de mi mismo (1934), a response to several vanguard movements from futurism and creationism to surrealism. Chapter Three analyzes Jose Felix Fuenmayor's early novels, Cosme (1927) and Una triste aventura de 14 sabios (1928). Both explore occult realities and constitute a radical stand against logic and reason. The former is mainly based on Jungian psychology; the latter on science fiction and metafiction. Chapter Four considers Freudian psychoanalytic theories in Jose Restrepo Jarmillo's La novela de los tres (1926), an early example of self-referential literature in Colombia. Chapter Five examines Cesar Uribe Piedrahita's Mancha de aceite (1935) as both a protest against North American imperialism and an adaptation of cinematic techniques in the structural format of the novel."
