El Discurso De Respuesta en La Obra Primigenia De Ruben Dario (1888-1898)

"Dario's awareness of the duality of Spanish American culture, as illustrated by Simon Bolivar's 1819 Discurso de Angostura, makes his literary work more significant. This cultural dilemma of belonging to either Europe or America leads Dario to formulate a literary discourse that responds to the hegemonic center--any colonialist source of culture--by replacing it by a new, alternative center: Spanish America. Based on this premise, I examine several of Dario's well known texts, such as the ""Palabras liminares"" from Prosas profanas, short stories published in Azul ... and elsewhere, and essays in which Dario attempts to formulate the Spanish American response to the culture of the hegemonic center. Since Dario relies on the use of parodic discourse (Bakhtin, Hutcheon), which is essentially subversive, his response attempts to question the artistic models received from the center. By refashioning these models while contributing in the production of literary texts, Dario proves Spanish America's ability to create art, and also continues the process of nation-building (Bhabha), represented by a grammatology, or system of texts that define the continent's cultural identity."
