This cultural dilemma of belonging to either Europe or America leads Dario to formulate a literary discourse that responds to the hegemonic center--any colonialist source of culture--by replacing it by a new, alternative center: Spanish America. Based on this premise, I examine several of Dario's well known texts, such as the \"\"Palabras liminares\"\" from Prosas profanas, short stories published in Azul ... and elsewhere, and essays in which Dario attempts to formulate the Spanish American response to the culture of the hegemonic center. Since Dario relies on the use of parodic discourse (Bakhtin, Hutcheon), which is essentially subversive, his response attempts to question the artistic models received from the center.
