Decision Making in Dry-Grind Ethanol Industry Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

Calibration on the FT-NIR spectrometer for total soluble sugars predicted fermentation samples with a RMSEP of 0.87% w/v and RPD of 8.7. Total soluble sugar ranged from 0.4 to 22.2% w/v. Thus, in order to observe the effect of treatment on total soluble sugars, the difference between total soluble sugar for treatment and control should be greater than 1.74% w/v. From the difference of the LSMEANS of treatments for total soluble sugar with control, it was observed that not until 12 hr after the start of fermentation was there a difference of more than 1.74% w/v. Thus, observing the effect of organic acids on total soluble sugar would have limited use because earlier detection is desired. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).
