The Evolution of Compositional Style in the Latin Choral Music of Knut Nystedt

In this study Mr. Nystedt's evolutionary growth in compositional style is documented through the analysis of compositions chosen from his three distinct compositional periods: the early works, the period of experimentation, and the period of consolidation. Each work was chosen to represent stylistic features common to and representative of each compositional period. Regarding the analytical method employed, each piece was studied and evaluated in terms of the composer's handling of the compositional elements of formal design, chant influence, texture, harmony, melody, rhythm, and timbre. This systematic study of each work revealed the unique ways in which Mr. Nystedt manipulates and combines the elements of composition to create a personal style. The result of this process was the discovery of style characteristics common to each stylistic period. The central thesis of this paper seeks to articulate these style characteristics and support them with appropriate illustrations and examples from representative works.
