Each work was chosen to represent stylistic features common to and representative of each compositional period. Regarding the analytical method employed, each piece was studied and evaluated in terms of the composer's handling of the compositional elements of formal design, chant influence, texture, harmony, melody, rhythm, and timbre. This systematic study of each work revealed the unique ways in which Mr. Nystedt manipulates and combines the elements of composition to create a personal style. The result of this process was the discovery of style characteristics common to each stylistic period.
