Repertoire Selection Practices of Class B and C Illinois High School Bands

Abstract

dc:description

This study was designed to examine the programming practices of smaller high school band programs in the state of Illinois. The purposes of the study was to (a) investigate the repertoire selection and programming practices of small to middle size high school band programs in regards to musical genre, (b) to determine if such factors as experience, education and age of the director, budget and setting of the school affect the diversity of the repertoire selected, (c) to compile a list of compositions performed by small to middle size high school bands, and (d) to contribute to the research accomplished in the area of repertoire selection. Directors of randomly selected high school band programs (n = 100) were sent two surveys, a Program Information Questionnaire (PIQ, and a Literature Frequency Report Form (LFRF). A third instrument, a Literature Evaluation Form (LEF) was sent to an expert panel of three. An examination of the responses of directors (n = 90) indicated that there were nonsignificant relationships between demographic factors and the diversity of repertoire programmed. The most programmed works reported by directors were First Suite in Eb, Gustav Holst (n = 36); On a Hymnsong of Phillip Bliss, David Holsinger (n = 35); Sleigh Ride, Leroy Anderson (n = 35); Emperata Overture, Claude T. Smith (n = 29); Flourish for Wind Band, Ralph Vaughan Williams (n = 26); The Light Eternal, James Swearingen (n = 26); English Folk Song Suite, Ralph Vaughan Williams (n = 24); Salvation is Created, Tschesnekoff/Houseknecht (n = 23); A Christmas Festival, Leroy Anderson (n = 23); Amparito Roca, Jaime Texidor (n = 22); Chant and Jubilo, Francis McBeth (n = 17); and Liberty Bell March, John Philip Sousa (n = 17).
