Sacred Vocal Compositions Including Trumpet Parts by Pavel Josef Vejvanovsky (c.1639--1693)

Vejvanovsky's musical style, like the other composers in the Hapsburg territories, is grounded in the principles of rhetoric and based on Italian models. Yet, he is able to inject a refreshing and individual approach to his compositions, particularly in his use of color and harmonic style. His expressive use of dissonance is manifested in his trumpet parts by consistent use of impure partials and intentional melodic and harmonic clashes. Vejvanovsky tends to stress the trumpet's lyrical and vocal qualities in both his sacred and secular music rather than its obvious military connotations.
