Transfers Within the Family: Evidence for the United States, Mexico and Burkina Faso

The third chapter examines the link between intrahousehold bargaining power and inter-vivos transfers for households in Burkina Faso. It presents a new measure of bargaining power based on the residual from a regression of bride price on detailed characteristics of the wife's family. This residual captures factors unobserved by the econometrician that provide the wife with additional power in household bargaining relations. The chapter explores how this additional power accrues and its impact on transfers to immediate family members. The data indicates that women with higher exogenous levels of bargaining power are more likely to give larger transfers to their immediate family.
