It presents a new measure of bargaining power based on the residual from a regression of bride price on detailed characteristics of the wife's family. This residual captures factors unobserved by the econometrician that provide the wife with additional power in household bargaining relations. The chapter explores how this additional power accrues and its impact on transfers to immediate family members.
