Markov-Based Analysis of Life -Cycle Employment Profiles

With respect to labor force participation, we first find that the employment gender gap is driven primarily by the higher exit rates of women from full-time employment and to a lesser extent by the transitions of women from part-time employment. Secondly, we find that the pattern of part-time employment differs across the genders: for men, part-time employment is a transient state between successive bouts of full-time employment; for women, it is a more persistent state and a precursor to a withdrawal from the labor force.
