Regulation of Glycogenolysis in Anaerobic Skeletal Muscle
Abstract
dc:descriptionFunctional compartmentation of anaerobic metabolism was demonstrated in intact tissue. Force-independent ATP utilization, primarily the Ca 2+ pump of the sarcoplasmic reticulum, preferentially uses ATP derived from glycogenolysis. ATP produced by creatine kinase is used mostly by force-dependent ATP consuming processes, primarily the actomyosin-ATPase. Although prior evidence of sub-cytosolic metabolic compartmentation exists, the majority of these studies are not in intact cells or tissues. The demonstration here of functional compartmentation of ATP production for specific ATPases shows that metabolism needs to be considered with this in mind.
