Genetic Variation Among Maize Genotypes for Carotenoid and Tocopherol Compounds

We analyzed the amount of carotenoid and tocopherol fractions at early, intermediate, and late stages of kernel development; and the rate of deposition during this period. Although there were differences among genotypes, general tendency was that both classes of compounds accumulated rapidly in early stages of kernel development. Genotype was more important than environment in determining the rate of carotenoid and tocopherol deposition, although the environmental factors could have significant effects on the final levels of these antioxidant vitamins.
