Finally, the use of DNAzymes in biosensing applications was studied for Pb2+ detection. The molecular beacon DNAzyme biosensor was shown to be capable of detecting Pb2+ in soft to moderately hard water sources when used in conjunction with a handheld fluorometer. Detection limits under these conditions were lower than 72 nM, which is the EPA standard for Pb2+ in drinking water. An electrochemical Pb2+ sensor has also been developed by conjugating a ferrocene moiety to a gold electrode immobilized DNAzyme system.
