A Design Approach for Seismic Retrofit of Circular Bridge Columns With Lap Splices
Abstract
dc:descriptionA careful examination of the cross section of the only column that was pulled to failure during the field tests carried out in this study suggested that the cracking pattern in the section was different from that assumed failure mechanism in the design method that was used. That was presumed to be the result of the offset orientation of the bars in the lap splice. However, due to irregularities in the reinforcement details for the field columns the correlation was not obvious. Therefore, a laboratory investigation was undertaken in order to study the optimal amount of lateral confinement necessary to avoid a lap splice failure, the influence of the bar orientation in the retrofitting of the columns, and to assess the different retrofitting techniques. Eight half size models were built with characteristics similar to the field columns, #11 bar sizes and thirty diameter (1.09 m (43 in.)) lap splice lengths, in order to be able to correlate the laboratory results directly with field columns results. To keep the number of the parameters to a minimum all columns were designed with exactly the same cross section. Meanwhile the amount and type of confinement was varied.
