Genetic Studies on the Manipulation of Carotenoid and Tocopherol Content in Sweet Corn and Broccoli

The second part of the study identified several quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with the carotenoid and tocopherol variability segregating in two F2:3 sweet corn populations. A number of the identified QTL mapped to chromosomal locations containing previously identified QTL or known genes in the carotenoid biosynthetic pathway in maize. The information generated from this study will be used to design methods to enhance the antioxidant carotenoid and tocopherol content in sweet corn and broccoli germplasm. In conclusion, this investigation suggests that sweet corn and broccoli germplasm with improved concentrations of carotenoids and tocopherols can be developed using conventional breeding protocols.
