The Context and Practice of Learning in Community-Based Arts Education Programs

This study describes a set of community based arts education programs for children and adolescents in low-income, urban neighborhoods using detailed observations, interviews, and archival materials. The programs are explored as resources for individual youth development and as resources for local community organizations. Four community program sites are investigated in interviews with stakeholders and researcher observations. Additionally, one program site is closely analyzed in terms of the patterns of activity in the classroom setting and patterns of youth participation in these activities over time. Participant observation and audiorecording of classroom activities inform this understanding of a developing community of practice. Key findings indicate that community based arts programs may provide rare opportunities for young people to engage in a learning community and demonstrate ownership and competence in that educational setting.
