A Study of Four ESL Students' Experiences With Communicative Language Teaching: Cultural and Personal Aspects in Class Interaction and Newsgroup Participation

The findings, presented in individual portraits and a general cross-case discussion, reveal the development of the students' communicative styles, and further address their coping with second language acquisition and academic adaptation in the United States. Themes emerging from the cross-case analysis include (a) detached inner relationship vs. stronger bond with English and (b) higher vs. lower flexibility in adaptation. The study concludes with a discussion of the conceptual, methodological, and pedagogical implications and recommendations for future research and instruction.
