An Analysis of the Utilization of SSI Incentives by Transition Professionals Working With Students With Visual Disabilities

The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which there is a relationship between residential school for the blind transition coordinators' reported knowledge levels of selected SSI information, cash, medical and work incentive items and their reported level of use of these items with their high school students in transition planning. Thirty-one of the 38 identified professionals responsible for coordinating transition services for high school youths with visual disabilities enrolled in state residential schools responded to a three-part survey. The survey inquired about their professional background, institutional characteristics and their knowledge and use of specific SSI information and work incentive items. Respondents reported limited knowledge and utilization of all 11 SSI information and work incentive items in transition planning with their high school students. Implications and recommendations for increasing knowledge and utilization of SSI work incentives among state residential school for the blind transition professionals is discussed.
