The Socialization of Junior Tenure -Track Faculty Members in Research Universities

The 2001 Faculty Socialization Questionnaire ( FSQ) was used to analyze and compare the perceptions of junior faculty of color and their non-minority colleagues based on select variables. The study also investigated qualitatively the perceptions of their day-to-day experiences with their colleagues in their departments, what it was like to be a junior faculty, how they were learning to do their jobs, and their contributions to the core mission of their departments. The findings of the study revealed that faculty of color perceived lack of collegiality in the departments, lack of welcoming environment, suffered from alienation, loneliness and boredom, lack of mentoring, lack of support for teching and research, lack of communication and support from senior faculty members, and support for structure faculty development programs for faculty of color. The non-minority faculty members perceived more collegiality and support from senior faculty members, had mentors, and opposed the idea of faculty development programs for faculty of color.
