An Analysis of the Formal Mentoring Concept in Business and Industry: Implications for Development and Implementation

Abstract

dc:description

With an awareness of the kind of developmental assistance mentors can provide inexperienced employees, public and private sector organizations have encouraged mentoring relationships as part of their career development programs. Employers often looked toward a formal mentoring program as a means of instituting a management continuity system at a variety of levels. Some have used the program as a vehicle to integrate newcomers, protected class employees, and high potential employees more rapidly into the mainstream. However, there was no empirical evidence which described how formal mentoring programs were used in business and industry.
