Literature Sources in Elementary and Early Childhood Education (Bibliometrics, Eric, Citation Analysis)

This bibliometric study assesses literature sources of elementary and early childhood education documents sampled from a 30-month input to the ERIC database by the ERIC Clearinghouse on Elementary and Early Childhood Education. The identified ERIC document population is grouped according to intended audience orientations through the use of pubtypes (publication type codes assigned to ERIC documents during the indexing process). The three orientations identified are research, interpretation, and practice. One hundred ERIC documents are randomly selected from each of the three document groups. Both the CIJE and RIE subfiles of the ERIC database contribute proportionately to the sample of research-, interpretation-, and practice-oriented documents. The references included in each selected ERIC document are counted and grouped by orientation to assess the mean number of references per document in the orientations. One thousand references are randomly selected from each orientation while maintaining a proportionate distribution between CIJE and RIE document references. Subsequent literature dispersion among 28 identified disciplines. The study also discusses disciplines that serve as major literature sources for each orientation and provides lists of journal titles that can be considered core journals for these same orientations.
