The Delayed Neurotoxicity of Thio-, Allylthio- and Dithio-Carbamates and Its Relevance to a Mode of Action

34 aryl carbamates which were synthesized in the laboratory and 4 commercial carbamates, were screened for delayed neurotoxicity in the White Leghorn hen. Several carbamates proved to be delayed neurotoxins with this ability being particularly concentrated in the thiocarbamates bearing short, unbranched alkyl sidechains. The toxicity of these compounds was further examined in Musca domestica (LD(,50)) and Culex quinquefasciatus (LC(,50)) to discern correlations between esterase inhibition and delayed neurotoxicity.
