Learning orientations and related instructional perspectives within educational programs for male spouse abusers

Domestic violence is a profound social issue facing our nation. Educational programs for spouse abusers have become the treatment of choice within many communities. This study investigated the instructional features of these programs from the perspective of the group instructor's learning orientation. In-depth interviewing and other qualitative methods were employed to examine how instructors viewed the various aspects of these programs. The study reported the espoused learning orientations of instructors and how their orientations affected teaching approaches and client learning. Instructors varied in the degree they used methods consistent with their espoused learning orientations. Further discussion is included on issues of transformation of learning orientations, instructional autonomy, learner motivation, control of content, and the extent these programs are considered therapeutic or educational.
