High-pressure studies of solid state reactions in organometallic copper(II) and nickel(II) systems

dc:descriptionThe continuing importance of solid state materials has prompted greater interest in the understanding of fundamental processes which occur in the solid state. Phase transitions and reactions are crucial to the properties, production, and processing of solid state materials and yet remain phenomena which are frequently not well-understood. This thesis focuses on unimolecular solid state reactions. High pressure spectroscopic techniques are used in studies of isomerization reactions in organometallic copper(II) and nickel(II) complexes. Electronic absorption spectroscopy is used to assess configuration and changes in configuration induced by pressure. Pathways for solid state isomerizations reactions are discussed. Studies of polycrystalline complexes and of some of the complexes as dopants in polymeric media are presented. The effect of solid state environment on isomerizations reactions behavior is considered.
