Effects of prenatal testosterone treatment on growth performance and carcass characteristics of cattle and sheep

dc:descriptionSix experiments were conducted to determine the effects of prenatal testosterone treatment (P) alone or in combination with postnatal steroid implantation (I) on growth performance, carcass traits, nitrogen balance and endocrine status of cattle and sheep. In Exp. 1, P heifers possessed improved (P $$.10) were observed with fecal, urinary and total N excretion and amount of N absorbed. Nitrogen retained (% of intake and g/d) was higher (P $<$.05) in P ewe lambs compared to control ewe lambs. Plasma insulin and insulin-like growth factor I concentrations were 99.0% and 28.7% higher (P $<$.05) in P ewe lambs, respectively. Non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentrations were 41.3% greater (P $<$.05) in P ewe lambs.
