Harnessing AI for older adults: examining the applications, use acceptance, and perception of conversational agents in care

This three-paper dissertation investigates the role of artificial intelligence-based conversational agents in supporting the health and well-being of older adults. The first paper employs a scoping review to systematically examine existing AI-based conversational agents designed for mental health support among older adults, analyzing their usability, effectiveness, and the unique challenges faced by this population. The second paper utilizes a quantitative approach to evaluate the acceptance of AI-based CAs in a healthcare setting, identifying key factors influencing older adults’ adoption through a survey of 314 participants. The third paper qualitatively explores the specific needs, preferences, and acceptance of AI-based CAs among older Chinese immigrants through 13 in-depth interviews. Together, the findings emphasize the importance of user-centered design, cultural adaptability, and equitable accessibility in AI-based care solutions. This research contributes valuable insights to social work practice by identifying practical barriers and opportunities, guiding the development of more inclusive, effective, and culturally competent digital interventions for diverse older adult populations in the digital era.
