Learning management system course space design: nonlinear information architecture for studio courses

Due to technology, teaching and learning have evolved. Learning management systems (LMS) are an essential part of digital pedagogy. With the power of design, this study uses the intersection of Critical Digital Pedagogy and Human-Centered Design to answer the challenges of rehumanizing digital learning for educators in in-person studio courses. The triangular dynamic between instructors, students, and designed course space has been studied in interview and survey research methods, and information architecture has been analyzed. By analyzing teacher and student responses and their visual course space designs, this study identifies areas of need in information architecture and course content management in which both students and instructors were challenged. Three course space templates, each with a nonlinear information architecture, are introduced to facilitate faculty course space creation and improve students’ navigation and access to course materials.
