A portable, smartphone-linked, and miniaturized photonic resonator absorption microscope (PRAM MINI) for point-of-care diagnostics
Abstract
dc:descriptionPoint-of-care testing (POCT) has revolutionized healthcare with its rapid, accurate, and all-in-one diagnostic capabilities. In this work, we report the development and validation of the miniaturized Photonic Resonator Absorption Microscope (PRAM Mini), integrated wirelessly with a smartphone application. PRAM Mini harnesses the unique optical coupling of photonic crystal (PC) guided-mode resonance and gold nanoparticle (AuNP) localized surface plasmon resonance to achieve a significant reduction in reflected PC intensity caused by the localized quenching of the AuNP. As an initial demonstration, PRAM Mini effectively detects SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in clinical samples using a blocking biosensor assay. PRAM Mini offers a compact and cost-effective solution for point-of-care diagnostics with text-book-sized dimensions of 23 cm × 21 cm × 10 cm and a total cost of $2,111.65. Its digital resolution quantification features and smartphone-linked functionality enhance accessibility and usability in diverse healthcare settings. The PRAM Mini is a promising tool for addressing the increasing demand for portable and efficient diagnostic solutions, contributing significantly to improved patient care and healthcare system efficiency.
