Bioinspired 9-band camera for multispectral imaging in the near-infrared

Image-guided cancer surgery using near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence, with real-time guidance for tumor localization and margin identification, has great promise to enhance surgical precision and improve patient outcomes. Current imaging systems are bulky, expensive, exhibit co-registration errors between visible and NIR frames, and are limited to detecting a single fluorophore. This thesis presents a novel bioinspired multispectral camera capable of imaging and differentiating multiple NIR fluorophores excited with a single excitation source. The camera features a unique spectral filter array with nine passbands in the NIR, in addition to a visible filter for simultaneously capturing RGB information. The filter array is monolithically integrated with an array of vertically stacked photodiodes, allowing sophisticated and spatially efficient multispectral imaging.
