TRIO works: A comparative analysis of trio student support services program participants and trio eligible non-participants at a Midwest community college

This study was an exploratory comparative analysis of academic outcomes of first-generation and low-income TRIO Student Support Services participants and students who were eligible to participate but did not participate in the TRIO Student Support Services program at Corn Belt Community College. The study examined the outcomes of N=2,110 eligible students (n=1,890 non-TRIO; n=220 TRIO) over nine years from the 2012-2020 academic years. The study applied the theoretical lens of Open Systems theory. The Chi-square test was utilized for the categorical variables to determine significance. The study found that TRIO Student Support Services positively affects educational outcomes for FGLI students, especially in grade point average, graduation rates, and fall-to-fall retention.
