Deterministic sensor calibration methods for distributed inertial navigation systems

In this thesis, we explore a method used to perform deterministic calibration of the accelerometers and gyroscopes on the Distributed Inertial Sensor Integration (DISI) Kit. We develop a set of hardware testing requirements, procedures, and analyses for each of the sensors integrated on the motherboard and daughterboards of this distributed inertial navigation system (DINS). We present various means of hardware testing methods and sensor calibration improvements for the inertial measurement unit (IMU). These requirements cover testing ranges for frequency response tests, static and dynamic tests, thermal, vacuum, and electromagnetic field tests as well as data collection methods that are used during these tests. Sensor calibration improvements to increase accuracy of the relationships developed are presented.
