Pillar notes and phrase templates: A pedagogical phrasing method for oboe applied instructors

This dissertation develops a pedagogical method for teaching phrasing to undergraduate oboe students using phrase templates—categories of phrase shapes that guide musical expression. Many authors within performance practice literature discuss musical phrasing and performance, often employing one of three metaphors: music as motion; music as language; or music as shape. I borrow elements from many of these authors in order to meld these three metaphorical representations into a practical phrasing method. Users first determine the lengths of the phrases within a piece of music and then select a single note per phrase to act as the pillar note, or the intensity peak of that phrase. Their choice in pillar note determines the phrase template. My goal is to help applied instructors teach performance students to independently plan their phrasing, infusing their playing with direction, nuance, and expression.
