Building capacity for resilient community sport organizations against crises

Organizational resilience is a critical capability that enables an organization to function and thrive during times of adversity. The crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic to the service delivery of American collegiate sport clubs (ACSCs) highlight the importance of organizational resilience to their recovery. However, there is not much information on how organizational resilience is achieved, limiting effective club management in times of crises. Using a mixed-methods approach, this dissertation study examines the relationship between organizational capacity, resilience, and outcomes and the process of how greater capacity and resilience can be achieved under the impact of a crisis in the ACSC context. Structural equation modeling was utilized to quantitatively examine the relationship with an organization-centered approach. Then, semi-structured interviews were analyzed to understand the process of resilience development. Findings indicate that the ACSCs’ capacity profiles largely shape organizational resilience, which in turn determines their capabilities of goal achievement, and highlight the influence of external forces and the university recreation department on the resilience development of ACSCs. The major theoretical contribution of this study is to provide an integrated conceptual model that the resilience of ACSCs builds on the interactions between club, governing body, and environmental level factors. Practically, this study suggests how ACSCs can achieve greater resilience through collaborative capacity building with the recreation department.
