Partial discharge analysis of a candidate winding used in electric aircraft propulsion
Abstract
dc:descriptionThis focus of this thesis is twofold, the first objective is to study the partial discharge characteristics of a candidate electrical insulation system for form wound windings in a high frequency electric machine used in aircraft propulsion. To this extent, a thorough analysis via phase resolved discharge patterns, pulse sequence analysis, and trending of discharge parameters through an accelerated aging test are detailed in this thesis. To investigate the impact of low-pressure conditions on aircraft applications, discharge characteristics at pressures of 0.2 atm (cruising altitude), and up to 1 atm are also studied and detailed. The second objective is to investigate the possibility of end-of-life prediction for an electrical insulation system based on partial discharge characteristics. End-of-life prediction fulfills the need for an easily interpretable signal for insulation quality. A barrier to the successful prediction of the remaining lifetime of insulation systems is the statistical nature of the partial discharge phenomenon. This study catalogs various features of a collected partial discharge dataset and analyzes their usability towards the goal of end-of-life prediction with respect to the statistical variance found between samples of the same age.
