Media representations of gender in contemporary China

In recent years, the Chinese government has tightened its control over public opinions via a variety of propaganda strategies. This paper explores gender issues in Chinese official media over the past five years and analyzes what they reveal about the Chinese government’s current perceptions of gender norms and relationships. Instead of solving the structural problems behind the gender issues, the state seems more focused on upholding the patriarchy and silencing feminists. These moves jeopardize both gender equality and the rights of Chinese women. Compared to the past, China has reduced the use of coercive and forcible means in favor of more subtle and covert manipulation in its efforts to control speech and expression in the digital era.
