This paper explores gender issues in Chinese official media over the past five years and analyzes what they reveal about the Chinese government’s current perceptions of gender norms and relationships. Instead of solving the structural problems behind the gender issues, the state seems more focused on upholding the patriarchy and silencing feminists. These moves jeopardize both gender equality and the rights of Chinese women.
